The 1,000th apprentice to graduate through the end-point assessment process with the Energy & Utilities Independent Assessment Service.
After four enjoyable years in the Royal Navy as a Marine Engineer Mechanic, which included deployments off the West Coast of Africa and the Far East, Jonathan Li embarked on finding a service leavers career which enabled him to use his mechanical engineering skills and remain hands-on, whilst offering flexibility.
Jonathan’s first move after leaving the Navy was to set-up his own groundwork business. After gaining further qualifications, he moved into working on the construction of wind farms, attracted by the innovative sector and the challenges it offered. Wanting more flexibility to care for his young family, Jonathan was then drawn to the role and skills of ‘cable jointers’ working on the wind farm site.
Jonathan said:
“I love working with my hands and have done since my days in the Navy. ‘Cable Jointers’ roles are specialist and highly skilled but practical too. This really interested me and led me to explore a Power Network Craftsperson apprenticeship with SP Energy Networks.
“From day one, SP Energy Networks have been brilliantly supportive. The whole training team were 100% right behind me. They were always on hand to answer questions, offer support and enabled a good work/life balance.”
Jonathan underwent a two-year apprenticeship with the company and is now fully qualified after passing a robust end-point assessment with the Energy & Utilities Independent Assessment Service.
Jonathan commented: “I can honestly say, the quality of training I received as part of my apprenticeship has been the best in my career. The training is hands-on, I was able to build my experience and specialist know-how every day, and I was surrounded by a great team. This enabled me to feel confident and fully prepared for the final end-point assessment.”
For service leavers, 35-year-old Jonathan agrees that the energy and utilities sector is attractive and offers interesting and sustainable career opportunities. He went on to say:
“As a next step in their career, this is a great opportunity for service leavers. It offers a similar supportive structure as the Forces, you get to work as a team, get hands-on and have the same backing from your superiors. I would strongly recommend it and in fact I have two friends who also joined an adult apprenticeship after seeing and hearing about my positive experience.”
Jonathan is excited about his future career in the energy and utilities sector with SP Energy Networks. He is looking forward to working in the field and eventually hopes to move into training future apprentices and service leavers.
